Saint of the Day

Saint Mechtilde (mathilda)
November 19

At THE age of seven, St. Mechtilde was entrusted to the nuns of Rodalsdorf, who shortly afterward elected her elder sister Gertrude as their Abbess. Mechtilde herself became a nun, and mistress of the school when the house moved to helfta. In this capacity, it became her lot to train a five-year-old who entered the monastery in 1261 and went on to become St. Gertrude the Great. The pupil wrote of her mistress: "There has never been anyone like her in our monastery, and I am afraid there will never be again"

In collaboration with another nun St. Gertrude wrote an account of Mechtilde's spiritual teachings and mystical experiences entitled The Book of Special Grace, which was made public after death on November 19, 1928.

PRAYER God, You prepared a pleasing abode for Yourself in the heart of St. Mechtilde the Virgin. Through her intercession mercifully lighten the darkness of our hearts so that we may rejoice in the knowledge that You are present and working within us. Amen.

The Dedication of the Basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul in Rome.

Today's Saint: St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, virgin
November 18

Born in Grenoble, France, in 1769, Rose joined the Society of the Sacred Heart. In 1818, when she was Forty-nine, Rose was sent to the United States. She founded a boarding school for daughters of pioneers near St. Louis and opened the first free school west of the Missouri.

At the age of seventy-one, she began a school for Indians, who soon came to call her "the woman who is always praying." Her biographers have also stressed her courage in frontier conditions, her single mindedness in pursuing her dream of serving Native Americans, and her self acceptance.

This holy servant of God was beatified in 1940 by Pope Pius XII and canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II

PRAYER Gracious God, You filled the heart of Philippine Dushesne with charity and missionary zeal and gave her the desire to make You known among all peoples. Fill us, who honor her memory today, with that same love and zeal to extend Your Kingdom to the ends of the earth. Amen.
